Have you ever thought about the weight astronauts carry when they go for a space shuttle mission? It must be immense to think about carrying around 645,000 lbs of equipment, food, water and fuel for 6-7 days. Astronauts are responsible for carrying all of this weight in their backpacks up to the International Space Station. These packs weigh no more than 45 pounds when they return because all of the materials that were not needed during their mission are jettisoned during reentry. The astronauts spend 6–7 days in space. All of the food, water and fuel are packed in their backpacks. The trip to the Space Station is a busy day for the astronauts. They will spend their time on several jobs and it’s important they get everything done so they can help out with the work needed while on board the Space Station. The astronauts will unload gear from their backpacks, while some of their time is spent unloading supplies from the shuttle’s cargo bay and reloading them into their packs. If there is time, they might also tape two huge pieces of equipment together that were brought on board by the shuttle astronauts. The astronauts spend a lot of time packing their backpacks as they prepare for the long voyage. When they reach the Space Station, the astronauts will begin assembling and testing their backpacks. The shuttle astronauts have to learn how to use all of these different tools and assemble, test and often rebuild 50-100 pieces of gear. It takes a long time for them to learn all they need to know about these different tools and assembly procedures. Once they have finished installing all of their gear, they must find a spot on the Space Station where there is enough room for it all. But before they do, they must take everything apart and put it in their backpacks so they can transfer everything to the Space Station. When the astronauts come home, they must go through a similar procedure when preparing for reentry. They will unload everything from their backpacks so it can be jettisoned before landing. The weight of all of this gear is immense to think about and the astronauts must be very careful not to bump into anything and cause any damage or injury that could affect their mission while in space or while trying to get out of their spacesuits after landing. They work together to make sure everyone is doing what they are supposed to be doing. To help out with the assembly of their backpacks, the astronauts are given some tasks using heavy equipment.
